A graduate of Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT, Kate Johnston worked as features editor of Your Life magazine and editor of the @boutSeniors website before going freelance and forming Word Has It in 2008. She has written for publications including The Sunday Age, Ride On and 259. Kate also teaches Writing for Magazines at the RMIT School of Creative Media and works as a communication training facilitator with Qantas and Jetstar.

Her fictional short story Exhibition in Utero was commended in the 2008 Glen Eira Short Story Competition.
